In our history books we have read and discussed the two world wars of the last century and labeled them World War I and II respectively. The reason we do that is because it involved most of the civilized world at that time. But were there other wars before that we can characterize as a world war? I think we can.
Jeremiah 25:8-9
“Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,’ says the Lord, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations.
Jeremiah 25:11
And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
The Middle East, or as some prefer to refer to as West Asia, was truly regarded as the civilized part of the world at the time of Jeremiah. And here we have a Babylonian empire that was being prophesied to be bringing into captivity on a scale that was probably never done before. Even the Egyptians did not do this. They created alliances with many nations around them but not the Babylonians. The people of Judah were part of the conquest of Babylon because they did not have God with them. The conquest, or should I say the REAL first world war, was foretold by Jeremiah. Except duration of the conquest was even foretold. This whole story of the Babylonians was also in my history lessons in school. Ahem! It is a fact of history.
The Christian life is never without its challenges. I believe that even if Judah did not sin, the Babylonians would still have come against them, but God would have intervened. Here God did not. When I am facing challenges I need God, but it starts with me seeking Him and His righteousness always, as instructed by Jesus Christ.
Father, help me stay with the theme verse of my life from Matthew 6:33. And Father, one more thing. May those reading this post understand the important reason for Jesus coming to earth. You came for them. You came to demonstrate your LOVE for them. Thank you for your precious love for me and my family.
