Israel has been the common enemy for many Middle Eastern countries and their allies over the years since Israel's formation. In a way it unified the main divisions of Islam, the Sunni and the Shiite. But this changed when much of the Muslim world saw the radicals from the Sunni sect engaging in proactive violence against the Shiite. Thus defocussed the militant efforts against Israel, especially when Syria started to have internal conflicts that allowed for a brand new militant group called ISIS.
