When someone's greatness is recognized it is usually after something out of the ordinary is accomplished. We go out of our way to make the recognition and celebrate with some pomp and fanfare. Such was the case when a man was thrown overboard and the sea became calm for safe passage. This is the story of Jonah.
Jonah 1:2-3
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Jonah was thrown overboard and stayed in the belly of a fish (there is no mention of what fish) for 3 days. But preceding this is a fascinating story of discovery of the great God of the people of Israel. When the storm hit, everyone was asked to pray to their gods. Jonah had to be woken up to do the same. As he shared his testimony they realized that a greater or the great God is at work. But they could not bring themselves to the decision of throwing Jonah overboard until they were truly desperate. Once it was confirmed that the sea calmed when they threw Jonah, they proceeded to worship God. God is recognized for His greatness.
Father, please exhibit your greatness through my life even if I may be martyred for the sake of the many unsaved souls.
