There have been laboratory tests done to look at how mice behave in certain conditions imposed artificially in them. They always seem to adapt to the point of their physical bodily limits. In the same way we can be adapting to chastisement to the point that we do not runaway even if the opportunity presented itself. We adjust to the pain and forget what could be better. Such was the case with Israel.
Amos 6:3-6
Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall; Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David; Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
Israel was chastised to bring them back to God but they chose to do wrong. They became immune to the chastisement until death. God has been speaking to them but they keep choosing to ignore the prophet's calls and enjoyed life. We can be in the same situation. The Lord is asking us to do certain things but because we are caught up with our things and pleasure, we ignore those plans. Soon the situation will overtake us. We need to wake up. It cannot be "all things being equal". We need to change the course of human history so that people will be saved. We cannot be chasing things that do not serve eternal benefit.
Father, the days are coming short. There is no time for extended sleep and rest. I need to work while it is still day.
