I am always amused when people speak with arrogance about what they have achieved (or will achieve) with their own hands. The sad truth is that they control very little of their present and the future. The past is a "done deal", and looking back you will notice how little you had to do with the journey you took. The first things to note is that you could not decide to be born, which womb, which city, and when. There are many stories of successful entrepreneurs. There are many more of failed ones that tried equally or more harder.
Isaiah 13:19-20
And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms,
The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
It will never be inhabited,
Nor will it be settled from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arabian pitch tents there,
Nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there.
Many great civilizations and kingdoms have risen and collapsed over the centuries. Here we have the kingdom of Babylon described in great detail on its destruction. People would never have thought during their days that such a thing could ever happen. Isaiah prophesied it, and history tells us that it came to pass. What a turn of events for a kingdom that came against Israel and captured it's people and thrived for a period of time. But we know that Nebuchadnezzar was already foretold by another Israelite, Daniel, through an interpretation of his dream about this collapse.
The collapse was not unexpected (Apologies for the double negatives, but this was done for emphasis). Can we expect more? Yes, of course. The bible tells us more are coming. It is not only a history book but a book for the future.
Father, thank you for this Book of Life that breathes great life for me each day. Continue to help me be encouraged by your promises and learn from the things of the past and see the hope mankind has for the future.
