In the old days people kept their money in the best possible safe places they could find. Every now and then they would do a counting exercise to both clean the money and ensure it is all still there. Some get very obsessed with this because they almost treat money as their god. David was also very obsessed with the strength of his armed forces that he decided to count them. What is the issue?
Israel won their battles not because they had a large force but because, as we learned yesterday, the Lord does what is good in His sight. God gave Israel the victory. Not their numbers or their skills. The story in this chapter is a painful lesson for David. It caused him to repent and learn to honor God.
1 Chronicles 21:24, Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.”
This is an important milestone. The location for the sacrifice is Jerusalem. David saw the angel standing between heaven and earth. This is simply amazing. It reminds us of God's sovereignty and how much our trust needs to be in Him.
Father, I trust you absolutely.
