Many of my American friends would remember the Vietnam War. Many were drafted to travel half way around the world to fight a war that was not theirs. It was an action to fight the spread the communism. However, many Americans spoke against the war and dishonored those who returned from Vietnam. Israel faced a similar situation.
2 Samuel 19:5, Then Joab came into the house to the king, and said, “Today you have disgraced all your servants who today have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives of your concubines,
David's men defended David and his followers against his son. But when his son was killed in the midst of the battle, David went into mourning. The men returned ashamed and quietly. It was not a victory but disgrace. What would you have done if you were David? Mourn your son or celebrate victory?
As David returned to rule much reconciliation happened but there was still animosity and division. The people wanted a return to David's kingship but Judah held a strong position against the rest of Israel. This conflict and differences of opinions were great leading to a divided people.
Father, help me to always seek peace and pray for unity for the people of God.
