I recently read a story about the Hilton hotel having a swingers' party with all kinds of activities that I would care not to share here. An estimated 800 people had come for this event. It obviously would not been missed by other hotel guests and may have been awkward for guests that came with families, even individuals and couples, that did not subscribe to this type of lifestyle. It is becoming hard to stay correct with society becoming more promiscuous by the day. Even substances, like marijuana, for which some countries like Malaysia are illegal to be carried or consumed and the crime is punishable by death, are being decriminalized in countries like the US.
The Rechabites have an interesting history. Like many clans of old, they take on the name of their ancestor and the line specifically mentioned is that of his son Jonadab that purposed to abstain from wine, not cultivate the land, not build and live in homes. They are basically living in tents and are nomads. The Rechabites, through this, stayed correct in the Lord and they were blessed. At the end God says through Jeremiah 35 in verses 18 and 19, "And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you, therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me". Where do you stand? Where do I stand?
Staying correct before God may require that we walk away from compromising situations, lest we fall and incur the negative consequences. Jonadab was wise and this instruction is captured and recorded here as an example not just for the people of Jerusalem, but for us today. The issues of temptation are just as evident then as they are now. What choices will I make? Choose right.
Father, show me well when I do not choose right.
