Beheading as a form of execution was common in the old days, but it was done away with in many modern countries because of its cruel nature. However, countries like Saudi Arabia and groups like ISIS practice this for some of smallest of crimes in their context. Whatever the case, it is a form of execution that predated Jesus' times and was used by Herod on John the Baptist. Though Herod was afraid to behead John, he used the excuse of a promise to Herodias' daughter to behead him. It was a sad day, but the Jesus' ministry was unaffected by this.
Matthew 14:6-8
But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”
In this chapter, Jesus retreated to a quiet place but the crowds followed Him and he performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000++ (plus women and children) with 5 loaves and 2 fish. The disciples had great doubts but they managed to feed everyone and still had leftovers. After that He sent off the disciples on a boat while He prayed on a mountainside all night. He then went to meet them by walking on the water and Peter had the experience of walking on water. Wow! There was tremendous astonishment on the boat that early morning and all worshiped Jesus.
Matthew 14:25-27
Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

On the one hand we have some cruel and unforgiving authorities. We have natural disasters and pestilences. On the other hand you can see the reality of God's presence and power on earth. I am reminded yet again that this place and body is temporary. We will continue to serve the Lord here as long as we have breadth. When the end comes we will be with Him in glory.
Father, let me remember that the present times will continue to be harsh and difficult, but You are with me and my home is in glory.
