The Egyptians had world dominance primarily driven by the abundance of food and surrender of other regions due to famine. After them came the Assyrians, then the Babylonians and then the Persians took great control of the region. In this new book of Esther you can see that the extent of the reported territory is huge.
Esther 1:1, Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia).
This kingdom had very good laws and even provided for temperance. Alcohol was optional, and I believe this was said because the king was not drunk when he called the queen.
Esther 1:8, In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man’s pleasure.
In this context a queen disobeyed the most powerful man on earth. He sought counsel from wise men and decided to strip the queen off her position. This is the context that we start with for the entry of a woman whose name is uttered very regularly in all Jewish households, and now in Christian households.
Father, help me go back in time and bring forth the message you have for all future Esther's.
