Have you missed doing something really important? Did you feel bad about it? Were you able to put things right? Did you lie in the process? Or, did you admit your failures and appeal to be able to make it right? This can happen with submission of taxes, bill payments, or a promise you made with or without much thought. The chapter today recaptures a serious moment when the Jews were reminded of the teachings from the Book of the Law.
Nehemiah 8:10, Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
The people discovered they missed doing many things, and they were weeping and mourning. But Ezra says to rejoice instead. And, allow the joy of the Lord to become their strength. They had missed doing many things since the days of Joshua. This is sad. One generation was all that was needed to forget the commands of God.
Nehemiah 8:17, So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness.
Parents, especially fathers, we are responsible to pass on the faith. To introduce Jesus to our children and grandchildren. If we fail, we will be called to account for this. Do not leave it to the Sunday School or Children Church. They only see them 2 hours or less a week.
Father, did I miss something? Help me catch up and correct the mistakes, and truly the joy of the Lord is my strength.
