When you know you are going to die, what would be your last words? In most instances people would be caught up with their dire conditions and leave distressed and upset. In a few others they are composed and choose to be practical and leave clear instructions on what they would like done after their death. In a few others, where they have a clear understanding of where they are going, they would give good advice to others on what they need to do with their lives. Paul did this.
What a man, approaching death, gives final instructions and advice. Instructions and advice are important. He has nothing to lose and he says it like it is. No politics and no correctness. Paul warns Timothy about certain individuals as well. He was forthright in what he has to say and millions have read it. But let's focus on Paul's advice.
Preach the Word! Do the work of an Evangelist. Yes, we need to help people find the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved from eternal death without God. That is also the last command given by Jesus Christ before He supernaturally ascended to heaven before the very eyes of the disciples. Paul could finish by saying that he has done it. He has finished well.
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Father, I am an evangelist and equipper of evangelists. Help me finish well too.
