While doing my computer science degree, because of the math pre-requisites, I had to do a number of 3rd year math courses. These included complex numbers and abstract algebra. Don't ask me anything about them. Once I was done, I was done with them. :) I suppose it helped me think creatively for the purposes of problem solving and that was the greatest benefit. Paul addresses some complex questions of the law for the Roman Church in Romans chapter 7.
But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
As I read this chapter and this verse, I was reminded of Zechariah 4:6. Truly it is impossible to do what I want to do. We tend to do what we ought not to do as Paul says it in different ways in this chapter. Apart from God, we cannot do it.
For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit given to us through accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Savior that we can truly do what is right in God's eyes. This is something as followers of Jesus Christ that we have to be constantly reminded of. My former faith also required that I do good, because as mentioned in my previous post, our conscience says it is the right thing to do. But I had no help. When I followed Jesus Christ, I could turn to the Holy Spirit.
Father, I must constantly turn to you!
