There is an old Sunday school song that I used to sing "Father Abraham had many children". It reminds me of God's faithfulness. Not just to Abraham and his descendants, but also to the whole world. There are many nations trying to exterminate the Jews for different reasons, failing to realize that Abraham is the ancestor of these people. He was given a promise that not only will he have a son in his old age, but he will also be a blessing to the nations.
In spite of the error he made with Sarah's maidservant, God was merciful. God's plan of salvation came through Jesus Christ conceived by Mary through a virgin birth, a descendant of Abraham. And like Abraham and Mary, we need to have faith to receive this blessing from God.
Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
This chapter emphasizes the role of faith, rather than works, that brings us the blessing of a restored relationship with God. This emulates Abraham's relationship with God that started with faith. Do you have faith in God and the blessing of forgiveness for your sin that came with Jesus dying on the cross? You can be one of Father Abraham's many spiritual children.
Father, I cherish the day I had the faith to say yes to You.
