In the world today you are encouraged to speak up and make a case for things that are done unjustly, or incorrectly. It is fair to speak up if we follow the principles of Matthew 18:15-17. However, too many times we get into heated discussions and speak "about the person" rather than "to the person". Proverbs highlights this unacceptable behavior. In fact it says that you bring honor to yourself by avoiding strife. Meet the person one on one in love, with a genuine interest in their well being.
Proverbs 20:3
It is to one’s honor to avoid strife,
but every fool is quick to quarrel.
Proverbs 20:7 says, "The righteous who walks in his integrity - blessed are his children after him!". Fathers, our walk brings blessings upon our children. Why withhold that blessing by doing wicked and unwise things. We cannot be fools. This seems logical but much short term view goes into our actions, words and attitudes thereby harming our walk and taking away the blessing.
Verse 22 says, "Do not say, "I'll pay you back for this wrong!" Wait for the LORD, and he will avenge you." Our natural tendency is immediate revenge. No, we wait on God to turn things around and in His sovereign way will take care of the details and bring the matter to a close. Yes, look to the infinite God to bring about an infinitely wise closure.
This chapter encourages love, faithfulness, diligence, patience and integrity. While our God given conscience says this is absolutely what we need to pursue, our love for money, immediate gratification and power pulls us into another direction.
Father, help me to be counter culture in all situations. I need to walk the right path ordained by the Almighty God for His glory. Shine through me O God, this is my prayer today.
