What comes first? Character or Performance Outcome? You may be wondering what I am getting at. I have seen many trying to get successful quickly without thinking about what it takes to have sustainable success. Yes, you may have "success" but it is not sustainable. True success is the result of great character. It includes character traits or qualities like diligence, responsibility, endurance, creativity, patience and tolerance (especially if working in teams). Character comes first! I believe, as the writer of Proverbs says it, this focus on character helps us understand the need for Godly wisdom. Focusing on silver and gold, or the performance outcome will not work. Choose God's way and success will come.
Proverbs 8:10-12
Choose my instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
for wisdom is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.
Proverbs 8 makes great emphasis on wisdom and treats wisdom like a living being in the presentation. There is an urging to listen to this God given wisdom. If we would do this we have riches and benefits more valuable than earthly treasures. No wickedness and unrighteousness is tolerated by wisdom. Arrogance and pride are hated by wisdom. Wisdom has been there from the beginning of time as God created the world.
I need His wisdom. This wisdom is there in us because we all have the same God given wisdom. But are we prepared to listen to this wisdom. Lord, take away the evil, the wickedness, the arrogance, the pride, and bad desires. Instead, as in verse 35, let me find life and obtain favor from you.
Father, it is You that I pursue, not riches and things that only have earthly value.
