Leadership is about making wise decisions. I am always reminded of Proverbs 9:9, where it says that the wise will be made wiser with teaching, and the righteous will increase their learning. You cannot make wise decisions if you are not wise and righteous. Saul was probably dumbfounded when his son takes the war to the Philistines singlehandedly with his armor bearer.
1 Samuel 14:6, Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.”
Saul appears to be upset when the Philistines start to disperse. He makes a roll call to see who is not there. He does other things wrong in this chapter, including starving his people and wanting to kill his son for eating honey. Saul is a great case study in poor spiritual and human leadership.
Father, I see and hear this and I seek your wisdom to lead well. Protect my steps as a leader. Guard my heart.
