I am my parent's oldest and only son. There is always a thought that I may have a brother but that is not known. In many cultures, while daughters are important for different reasons, sons have an important role in the family because of the passing of the lineage to the next generation. This is true in the Hebrew culture.
1 Samuel 1:22, But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the Lord and remain there forever.”
Hannah sought the Lord heavily for a son and the priest Eli blessed her request. Hannah however made a commitment to dedicate the child to the Lord for His service. He was to remain for the Lord's service forever. Though having a son was important, Hannah was prepared to give up her first born son to the ministry. She may not have any more children but she had faith in the Lord to give up her son for the Lord's service.
Lee Yen and I have great hopes for our children. But, if God wants to use them in any way, we surrender them to God.
Father, our children are a gift from you. Use them as you see fit.
