Water is an important element in any home. Generally, in traditional village homes, water is given to clean the hands and feet before a meal is served. I believe that when the Jewish leaders in this chapter complained about the disciples not washing their hands before the eat, they were referring to them not doing it the right ceremonial way. There are many things the Jewish leaders did because of tradition and accepted practices of the day. We also could be caught up with these things and miss the more important issues of life.
Mark 7:5-8
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”
Jesus was more concerned about heart issues. What proceeded from the mouth came from the heart and this reflected the true nature of someone's spiritual state. After this discourse with the Jewish leaders he proceeded to continue preaching the gospel and demonstrating Kingdom authority. A girl is delivered from demons and a deaf and mute man is healed. All this continued to increase Jesus' fame and I'm sure the Jewish leaders did not take lightly what was being said and done by Jesus.
As I continue to reflect on what is being said in this chapter about Jesus' words and actions, I wonder what and how we should do this in our time. Certainly the call is for us to do the work needed in our marketplace or spheres of influence. And, we need to see how we can do the very same things Jesus did. Staying pure with God's ideas and ways. Not adding anything from a human perspective.

Father, show me what and how.
