There is a common phrase that we use, "We are only going through the motions". Your heart is not in it. You do it because you need to either look good or it is something that you have always done, and you do it without thinking about the reason for your actions. Why do you visit your in-laws? Why do you greet your boss GOOD morning? Why do you go to church or any place of worship? Zechariah highlighted here that the people were engaged in religious activities because "they were going through the motions".
Zechariah 7:5-7
“Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me—for Me? When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves? Should you not have obeyed the words which the LORD proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and the South and the Lowland were inhabited?’”
Awhile ago I learnt about the "two feet down" prayer. The prayer asks God to take someone's head knowledge about God to their heart. The people of Israel were called to account and told to get serious with God. It is truly time to get serious with God. Time is short my dear friends. Don't just go through the motions thinking everything will be ok. They won't. Go to Jesus wherever you are and sit at His feet. He is there in your bedroom, in your office, in that restaurant and in that street corner.
I am sitting at His feet. What a beautiful time.
Father, I love seating at Your feet.
