Sure and Steadfast

I was in the Boys Brigade once a long time ago when I was 12. I attended it for a good 2 years at a Methodist Church near my home at that time, before I decided to join the Boy Scouts in my school. One of the fond memories I had was singing the theme song, " We have an anchor ". I was not a Christian then, but it planted seeds of faith for me. The following verse may have inspired this song, or reaffirms the words of the song. Hebrews 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. The people of Israel entered Egypt and endured 400 years of slavery as was foretold to Abraham their forefather.  This information would have been passed to his son and grandson before Jacob took his whole family to Egypt to escape the famine in the region.  Did the people of Israel stay faithful t...

Feed on meat

Every parent is eager to see their child progress from being a new born baby to an adult. From being totally dependent on them for every single thing to being totally independent. In many cultures they have a serious process for a child to enter adulthood, and it usually happens at puberty. The writer of Hebrews is concerned with the followers of Jesus Christ entering "adulthood" in their faith. Hebrews 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, This verse had to be shared to show that Jesus, who is God, was perfected in His humanness to become the provider of eternal salvation. He became the perfect sacrifice for us. Likewise, we must know our responsibility as "spiritual adults". Not feeding on milk but on meat.  However, sometimes we have to go back to the core understanding and this means we may have to go back to milk. Hebrews 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach yo...

Be saved and enter the Great Rest

It is truly amazing. No other book comes close to being the most printed and most read than the Bible. Of course its heritage are the Jewish Holy Scriptures. But, the New Testament is original in bible content based on God inspired writers of the first century church. These have been well authenticated to be the original writings and reflect actual events, persons and places. Hence, the following could be said. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hence, many quote it, including the prophet of the fastest growing religion in the world. The bible has withstood the test of time and continues to encourage and edify many generations of followers of Jesus Christ. If you are feeling down, or need direction in this complex web of life, read the Bible. Nothing comes close. The chapter comes to a cl...

A Great Rest is waiting

Do you believe there is a God out there? Actually, it takes great faith to believe there is no God. Imagine the universe, the earth, living and non living things, the human spirit, emotions and thought processes coming from something other than God. I cannot imagine it. And so, if there is a God, what is He telling us? Hebrews 3:7-8 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness. Our human nature is such that we know we need to seek help but we want to do things our way. God has a wonderful plan. He did so for the people of Israel as written in this chapter but they pursued their own ideas. As a result they could not enter God's rest for them. Hebrews 3:18-19 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive His great love an...

Clear plans for the world

As part of our homeschooling time, our children were doing creation science as opposed to regular science in schools. It covers science from the perspective of belief in God. Various theories and science ideologies are also studied and gives the child an opportunity to understand the different arguments. Hebrews chapter 2 continues to bring concepts that are literally out of this world, but they make great sense. Hebrews 2:14-15 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. In reading this chapter you will see the spiritual realm being explained. We ar...

Angels and someone else are real

Ever heard of visits by angels? Are they real. The bible is full of references to angels. Similarly, other religious persuasions also make mention of angels. The first chapter of Hebrews makes reference to Jesus Christ and compares His personhood with angels.  Jesus is described in great detail in this chapter. It is very clear that He is God. It shows up in the way He is referred to in this verse. Hebrews 1:8-9 But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” Yes, angels surround Jesus, but Jesus is not an angel. He is God. He came to earth so that we may have life. We have salvation through Jesus Christ because God loves us. At the same time God has sent us angels to minister to us. Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for...

We control our actions to do right

Much of our struggles have to do with things we cannot control. The events and sometimes accidents that befall us. The actions of people around us. One of my sons fell from his bike and badly hurt his toe when he was younger. He had the ability to control his bike somewhat, but not completely. Most times it is things that we don't control that hurt us. Paul as he writes to Philemon encourages us to focus on what we do control. That is our person through Christ. Philemon 1:4-7 I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother. Everything is to done in accordance with His ways as directed by the Holy Spirit. Our guidance is Him. Philem...
