Being generous is a virtue. But before you can be generous you need to carefully manage your resources. It does not help if you are in debt. Being generous while in debt is not a good idea. And because being generous is a great blessing, we need to make great effort to stay out of debt. Jacob was blessed by being generous with his brother, Esau.
Genesis 33:10-11, And Jacob said, “No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” So he urged him, and he took it.
With this generosity Jacob won great favor with Esau and he managed to cross into Canaan and settle in Succoth and build an altar to the Lord.
Genesis 33:20, Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.
The last phrase means, The God, the God of Israel. Jacob fully acknowledges God as his God and deliverer. Whatever his relatives did, did not matter. He chose to serve the Lord. He paid for the land and lived in it. He paid cash. Only God could have done this for him.
Father, I will be generous. Help me to manage my finances well. I know this starts with me being faithful with my ten percent.
