As human beings we have a way to look at the world through our paradigms or frame of reference. It is difficult to break from them because it will take us out of our comfort zone. We may break from it for a short while, but we tend to return to it because it is painful to make the shift. Someone who follows Jesus Christ struggles with the same.
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
The situation Peter is talking about indicates that people were mixing in their old beliefs with the purity of what God had done on the cross and the resurrection. It is interesting that this was happening in the first century. Of course we see and feel the effects in, among others, the teachings of the Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses and the fastest growing religion in the world.
I am reminded yet again that we cannot take the cross and the resurrection out of human history or out of God's divine plan for mankind. It is an absolute fact and nothing man has done is able to disprove it. In fact the people that operate as if this episode in history did not happen are said to be corrupt in their thinking.
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.
It's terrible that they putting people into bondage and fear. We must reject this and go back to the message of eternal value.
Father, may all that read this post seek Your truth and receive the perfect love, joy and peace that You have promised.
